The Illinois Fighting Illini appear to be headed toward a long second half of the 2026 season without their starting quarterback.
On Tuesday morning, head coach Bret Bielema revealed that graduate student Katin Houser had undergone a procedure on his right hand that will sideline him for four to six weeks, according to 247Sports' Joey Wagner.
At minimum, that keeps the Illini's standout passer on the bench for the next three games following Illinois' bye week: vs. Oregon on Oct. 24, at Maryland on Oct. 31 and vs. Nebraska on Nov. 6. Houser's status would also be up in the air when Illinois faces No. 12 UCLA on the road on Nov. 13 and hosts No. 17 Iowa on Nov. 20. Assuming the original timetable stands, Houser would return to the field — at the latest — at No. 25 Northwestern on Nov. 28.
Houser suffered his hand injury during the third quarter of Saturday's 38-37 overtime win against Michigan State. Upon throwing an interception to Spartans cornerback Devin Vaught, Houser tackled the defender to potentially save a pick-six. However, he hurt his right hand while making the tackle and was subsequently rules out for the remainder of the game.
In relief of Houser, true freshman Michael Clayton II led the Fighting Illini to victory. The former three-star recruit from Orlando, Fla., completed six of his eight passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Clayton threw a 14-yard back-shoulder score to Collin Dixon in the fourth quarter, then earned his second on a 25-yard catch-and-run to Hudson Clement on the first play of overtime.
Clayton will likely be the starting quarterback moving forward after impressing in his debut. Illinois' quarterback depth behind Houser was already shallow before the graduate student's injury. Aside from him and Clayton, the Fighting Illini's only other rostered quarterbacks are redshirt freshman Carson Boyd and true freshman Dane Eisenmenger.
Houser had been having a strong season prior to his injury. The fifth-year senior completed a career-best 66.3% of his passes for 1,440 yards, 12 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Houser also ran for 120 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
The 2026 season will be Houser's final season of eligibility, as the graduate student began his career with Michigan State and East Carolina. Illinois now has the opportunity to see what its future under center looks like with Clayton, and whether it has next season's starting quarterback in house or if Bret Bielema needs to hit the transfer portal this winter.
