Important Games to watch: Week 3

The biggest game of the weekend will, without question, be LSU vs. Ole Miss, but outside of that game, there are some other important matchups that could have long-term effects on both of the aforementioned teams and their chances of making the playoffs, especially if either one of them loses.

After playing LSU, Ole Miss will have to go to Gainesville to play Florida. This week, Florida is on the road against Auburn. This will be a very fun conference matchup between two rebuilding programs. This Florida team looks like it is on the way up, and a road victory against a scrappy Auburn team could give the Gators a lot of confidence heading into a home matchup against Ole Miss. Florida vs. Auburn will kick off at 6 p.m. on ESPN.

For LSU, when the Tigers are done in Oxford, they will return home to play Texas A&M. The Aggies will have a 2:30 p.m. kickoff on ESPN against Kentucky. Please understand, this is not a heavyweight matchup, but could this turn into a trap game for the Aggies? A&M needed an explosive fourth quarter to pull away late against Arizona State, and Kentucky was battling with Alabama throughout the first half of that game last week. Kyle Field will always be a tough place to play, but upsets have happened to A&M before. Even if the Wildcats come up short, can they keep this game close and wear down the Aggies before they get on the road and head to Baton Rouge?

This next game is not really important to LSU or Ole Miss, but it would be a fun one to keep an eye on during breaks in the LSU vs. Ole Miss game. Willie Fritz will lead his Houston Cougars into Lubbock to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders. This will be one of the best teams Fritz has had since he arrived in Houston, and he also has a pretty solid 2027 recruiting class coming in. Pulling off an upset against Texas Tech would signal that Houston is ready to compete for prominence in the Big 12, and Fritz would be putting the Cougars on the same trajectory he had the Green Wave on before he moved to Houston.
