Game Notes
Clemson’s run game, which primarily revolves around sophomore running back Gideon Davidson, will be heavily tested. He's tied for seventh in the ACC with 346 rushing yards on 59 carries and scored three touchdowns to start this season. The Hurricanes currently have the best rushing defense in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman’s unit has allowed just 158 total rushing yards on the season thus far.
The Hurricanes emphasize making opponents one-dimensional, which could force Clemson’s offense to be vulnerable. Tigers senior quarterback Christopher Vizzina, who isn’t listed on the ACC injury report, is still facing limitations. Freshman Tait Reynolds is likely to continue playing under center. He’s completed 54 of 84 passes (64.3 percent) and thrown for 521 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions in the last three games.
Clemson’s run defense has been inconsistent so far this season. They held Southern Georgia and Cal to fewer than 100 rushing yards; meanwhile, UNC and formerly No. 11 LSU went significantly over. As Hurricanes senior star running back Mark Fletcher Jr. returns from last Saturday’s absence against Central Michigan, it’s an opportunity for sophomore Girard Pringle Jr., freshman Javian Mallory, junior Jordan Lyle, and redshirt sophomore Chris Wheatley-Humphrey to exploit a potential weakness.
The Hurricanes’ offensive line will be tested, especially starting tackles Samson Okunlola (left) and Matthew McCoy (right) when facing junior edge rusher Will Heldt. He’s tied for fourth in the ACC with four sacks. Senior linebacker Sammy Brown is another standout defender to watch out for on Clemson’s front seven.
It should be a very competitive game against both ACC programs.
