Incoming Purdue AD Tommy McClelland tries, fails to mock Indiana

Purdue, Indiana’s in-state rival, ushered in a new era for its athletic department today with the introduction of Tommy McLelland as the Boilermakers’ newest athletic director.

McLelland is set to replace Mike Bobinski, who led the department for the past ten years, when the latter’s time in the role comes to a close in January 2027. He comes to West Lafayette from Rice, where he worked as the Owls’ athletic director since 2023.

McClelland gave his introductory press conference today and laid out his vision for the future of Purdue Athletics. Unfortunately for everyone involved, he tried to throw in a jab at Indiana in the process.

This is sports, it’s not that serious. Rivalry banter is to be expected at these things, as happened when Indiana introduced Curt Cignetti as its new head football coach in 2023, but more on that later.

There’s several ways McClelland could’ve made light of the rivalry and poked fun at the Hoosiers. He chose the one thing that wouldn’t land, even a little, and now it’s all anyone is going to talk about in the state of Indiana and around the country. The soundbite is already going viral with reactions around the country.

Now, the quote itself is already pretty bad. Indefensible, even, given the trophies in Indiana’s football facilities. It’s worse for a few reasons.

Indiana had been through the ringer this week with criticism of its football scheduling practices. Purdue has now come through looking far sillier and drawing much more ridicule. The Hoosiers own a 24-3 lead over The Boilermakers in national championships across all sports. Even historically speaking, the jab carries little weight.

Back to Cignetti’s initial Purdue jab. Indiana’s new head coach said his rival sucked at a basketball game, alongside the Big Ten heavyweights, to rile up his fanbase and set the tone for what he intended to (and eventually did) accomplish. Purdue’s new AD fired off a joke that makes no sense in front of some reporters, university leadership and athletics personnel.

Now, this doesn’t even really matter outside of a few laughs in July and maybe down the road. McClelland could very well be the force Purdue needs, particularly in football, right now and this could all be forgotten.

It sure is funny right now though.
