Indiana 2027 Class Breakdown: 5-star WR headlines defending champs’ pledge list

Indiana has climbed the top of the college football mountain, winning a national championship in stunning fashion. Curt Cignetti has the Hoosiers in new, rarified air and there’s no signs of slowing down this fall.

The Big Ten program signed a top-30 class last cycle, signaling a new level of recruiting momentum in Bloomington. To no surprise, winning a title has only helped Indiana when it comes to pushing for top prospects.

As of Aug. 25, IU has the No. 29 class in the 2027 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. While that may not be in the upper echelon alongside some of its conference compatriots, it remains a step in the right direction. The class headliner shows the kind of pull that the Hoosiers now have.

Just a few years ago, keeping a prospect like Indianapolis Lawrence North Five-Star Plus+ wide receiver Monshun Sales home would’ve been unthinkable for the Hoosiers. He also has ties to Alabama, and the likes of Ohio State, LSU and Texas were also involved in his recruitment. It was Indiana that landed his commitment on July 17, however.

“My decision to commit to Indiana was not an easy one,” Sales told Rivals through his agency Ascend. “The relationships that I made with the coaches and staff at Indiana throughout the process is what made it feel like home. Coach Cignetti has built a winning program and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

Sales is the catalyst. He’s flanked by a quartet of four-stars: Farmington (Mich.) EDGE Myles Smith, Noblesville (Ind.) offensive tackle Mason McDermott, Lincolnton (N.C.) linebacker Jalaythan Mayfield and Columbus (Ohio) Academy defensive lineman Reinaldo Perez.

Sales and McDermott are two of four in-state commits for Cignetti and Co. Brownsburg three-star WR Branden Sharpe is another talented pass-catcher in the mix. Over a year ago, the Hoosiers went to Illinois and landed a pledge from Park Ridge (Ill.) Maine South three-star quarterback Jameson Purcell.

There’s 17 total commits in the class, eight of whom plan to play on the offensive side of the ball at the next level. The class also ranks ninth in the Big Ten, ahead of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Maryland, Northwestern and others. Below is a look at the 2027 IU class, broken down by position:
