Indiana was just inches away from one of the biggest victories of its season. Instead, the Hoosiers were left wondering what could have been.
In a highly anticipated showdown between No. 5 Indiana and No. 4 Ohio State, the Hoosiers battled the Buckeyes for four quarters before suffering a crushing 19-15 defeat in Bloomington. The loss was Indiana's first of the season, dropping Curt Cignetti's team to 6-1.
And the way it ended made the defeat even more painful.
Facing 4th and 4 with the game hanging in the balance with just over a minute remaining, quarterback Josh Hoover dropped back and found wide receiver Nick Marsh wide open running toward the end zone. The throw was there. Marsh made the catch. For a split second, it appeared Indiana had pulled off a remarkable comeback.
But Marsh lost track of his positioning and stepped out of bounds, negating what would have been the game-winning touchdown. Instead of celebrating a monumental victory, Indiana watched its opportunity slip away.
It was a brutal ending to an otherwise gutsy performance.
The Hoosiers actually outgained Ohio State 369-313, with Hoover throwing for 296 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-40 passing. Wide receiver Charlie Becker was outstanding, hauling in nine receptions for 165 yards, while Marsh finished with three catches for 57 yards and a touchdown.
Unfortunately, Indiana couldn't consistently finish drives.
The Hoosiers struggled to establish anything on the ground, rushing for just 73 yards on 29 attempts. Turbo Richard led the way with 46 yards and a touchdown, while Lee Beebe Jr. managed only 24 yards on nine carries.
Indiana's defense certainly did its part.
The Hoosiers limited Ohio State to just 78 rushing yards, recorded four sacks and intercepted Julian Sayin twice. The Buckeyes' quarterback completed only 15 of his 29 passes, although he still threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns.
Ohio State grabbed a 10-7 halftime advantage before extending its lead to 13-7 in the third quarter. A 38-yard touchdown connection between Sayin and Jeremiah Smith pushed the margin to 19-7 early in the fourth.
Indiana responded when Hoover connected with Marsh for a 19-yard touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion to Richard, cutting the deficit to 19-15.
That set the stage for the heartbreaking finish.
Indiana had opportunities to win this football game. The Hoosiers forced turnovers, moved the football and put themselves in position to knock off one of the nation's best teams.
But against an opponent like Ohio State, the margin for error is incredibly small.
For Indiana, one unfortunate step out of bounds was the difference between a season-defining victory and a loss that will sting for a long time.
