NCAAF College Football News, Photos, Stats, Scores, Schedule & Videos...
Indiana coach Curt Cignetti’s impeccable track record in Bloomington makes it easy to envision a path back to the postseason. While Indiana needs to replace its first-ever Heisman winner in quarterback Fernando Mendoza and a handful of James Madison transfers (Aiden Fisher, Elijah Sarratt and D’Angelo Ponds) who became household names in the Big Ten, Cignetti has been the best talent evaluator in college football in recent years. Behind the scenes, there’s a high degree of confidence that IU has built a lasting winner.

Previewing Indiana’s Offense for 2026
Head coach Curt Cignetti follows the maxim of “production over potential” when it comes to transfers. Josh Hoover, the former TCU quarterback who’ll replace Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, is that adage come to life. Hoover is the most productive returning QB in the FBS with 9,629 passing yards and 71 touchdowns across 36 games (31 starts). He has a turnover issue that needs fixing and doesn’t have the same stature as Mendoza — he’s very generously listed at 6-foot-2 — but Hoover is the kind of heady player who will thrive in Cignetti’s scheme.
He will also benefit from the tremendous amount of experience on the offensive line. The group features three returning starters, including reigning Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year Carter Smith at left tackle.
Wide receiver Charlie Becker closed out 2025 looking like one of the country’s top playmakers and made a series of spectacular grabs that helped IU win the national title. He will line up next to Michigan State’s former top receiver Nick Marsh to give IU a potent passing attack.
Sophomore running back Khobie Martin is one to watch as well. The reserve has waited his turn and looks primed to have a breakout season.

Previewing Indiana’s Defense for 2026
Indiana added one of the top defensive ends (Tobi Osunsanmi) and cornerbacks (AJ Harris) out of the portal while bringing back six starters, including a pair of starting defensive tackles (Tyrique Tucker and Mario Landino) and linebackers (Rolijah Hardy and Isaiah Jones).
It’s an impressive mix of talent that will enable defensive coordinator Bryant Haines to create the same kind of havoc as he did last year. The Hoosiers had the second-most sacks in the FBS (46) and led the country in tackles for a loss (129) by mixing in stunts and twists up front, along with simulated pressures and disguises in the back end.
Previewing Indiana’s Specialists for 2026
Indiana special teams units were the best in the country. Returning placekicker Nico Radicic has been a sneaky weapon, having gone 28-of-30 on field-goal attempts since 2024. IU has plenty of talented athletes — receivers Tyler Morris and Shazz Preston along with running back Lee Beebe Jr. — capable of making an impact in the return game.
