Derek Owings, Indiana football’s Director of Athletic Performance, has been hired as the Director of Football Sports Performance at Tennessee, roughly the same job, the Volunteers’ program confirmed on Tuesday.
Owings was in his second season with the Hoosiers after following head coach Curt Cignetti from the same role at James Madison. He’s previously worked in assistant strength and conditioning coach roles at Texas Tech and Central Florida. Cignetti hired Owings as JMU’s Director of Strength & Conditioning in 2020. He’s trained 23 All-America selections and 27 first team all-conference honorees, per Indiana Athletics.
USC made a run at hiring Owings as its strength and conditioning coach last offseason before he received a pay raise at Indiana. Now, on the heels of the Hoosiers’ first national championship, he’ll be heading to Tennessee. He’s the second assistant under Cignetti to be hired elsewhere following Tino Sunseri’s hiring as UCLA’s offensive coordinator last offseason.
