The Indiana Hoosiers lost out on the initial commitment from defensive lineman Jalen Brewster. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Cedar Hill, Texas native is a five-star recruit and the No. 1 player in the nation, according to Rivals Industry Rankings.
He committed to the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Oct. 4, choosing them despite offers from the Hoosiers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, Texas A&M Aggies, Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners.
Despite that, the pass rusher has not completely shut down his recruitment. It would take a significant financial obligation to flip Brewster, with On3’s Pete Nakos reporting he is expected to make $1 million in his first year with Texas Tech.
That isn’t slowing down the Hoosiers, though. Steve Wiltfong, On3’s vice president of recruiting and transfer portal, revealed that Indiana continues to work on flipping Brewster.
“Indiana remains on the gas for Jalen Brewster, they’re not going to let up,” Wiltfong said. “Promising early playing time with a track record of getting the best out of young players, playing for a football team that has a schematic advantage Saturday in, Saturday out.”
It’s a hefty price tag for a high school recruit, but it could be a worthy investment for the Hoosiers. After reports that Indiana spent $40 million on their national championship-winning roster in 2025, head coach Curt Cignetti revealed that the number was actually closer to $15 million.
The interest between Indiana and Brewster has been mutual. The defensive lineman logged an official visit in Bloomington on April 25. With the recruiting trail beginning to heat up, they may not see an issue spending $1 million on Brewster, who still has another year of high school left.
The Hoosiers have already put together a 2027 cycle that ranks 34th in the nation and 11th in the Big Ten, but have yet to land a five-star recruit. Flipping Brewster would give the group a major boost.
