A Miami football staffer claims the reason Mark Fletcher took a swing at an Indiana player after the national championship game is because of disparaging words against the running back's dead father.
Fletcher was caught by ESPN cameras throwing a punch at Indiana defensive lineman Tyrique Tucker after Indiana's 27-21 win Jan. 19. Tucker was seen taunting Fletcher as a Miami assistant separated the two.
Tucker told The (Bloomington) Herald-Times after the fracas that he was "just trying to congratulate him on the game. He tried to sneak me, everybody kind of held me back. That was a cheap punch. Luckily, we got the win, I'm not really too worried about it. He's salty, he going home with the L."
But Mike Rumph, Miami's director of recruiting and on-campus experience, commented on the viral video posted by CBS Sports and left an explanation for Fletcher's actions, accusing Tucker of insulting Fletcher's late father.
"Dude was talking about Mark's dad who passed away last year," Rumph wrote. "Mark is always and will always be one of the most classy people you will meet. RIP Mr. Fletcher."

Rumph did not specify whether Tucker spoke about Fletcher's father during the game or after.
Fletcher ran for 112 yards on 17 carries, including a career-long 57-yard touchdown run to put Miami on the board. The junior had come out onto the field to congratulate Indiana quarterback and Miami native Fernando Mendoza for winning the game, a moment shared by ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe. She also noted she was excited for his return next season because he's a "total class act" and "I truly love that kid."
Mark Fletcher Jr. still texts his father after his death
Mark Fletcher Sr. died in October 2024, the week before Miami played Florida State. The younger Fletcher ran for 71 yards and a touchdown days later against the rival Seminoles. "Just a shoutout to my dad, paying him respect," Fletcher Jr. said after the game. The whole team attended the funeral for "Big Mark" the following week in Fort Lauderdale, and Fletcher Jr. scored another touchdown a day later against Duke.
During the national championship game, the ESPN broadcast reported Fletcher still texted his late father's phone number before every game. The announcers shared that his message the morning of the national championship was: "Good morning dad be with me boss man I love you."
His mother has traveled to see each game and has been one of the Hurricanes' biggest supporters.
Fletcher has been among the biggest pieces to Miami's success over the past few years. Over three seasons, he has 2,313 yards on 433 carries with 26 touchdowns, plus 308 yards and two TDs on 34 catches. In the 2025 season, Fletcher had 1,192 rushing yards, the most in the ACC, on 216 carries with 12 touchdowns and 140 yards on 17 receptions with two more scores.
Fletcher put up no fewer than 90 rushing yards in each of Miami's four College Football Playoff games, totaling 507 yards on 75 carries with three touchdowns with another TD coming through the air. He ran for a career-high 172 yards in a first-round 10-3 win at Texas A&M.
