"Kind of a wild game," Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. "I don’t know how to put words to it right ow. The defense stepped up in a big way down down the stretch. We had to win the game on defense at the end. The huge fourth-down play made it possible. We had to win in the fourth game. It was a great game, have to give them a lot of credit but credit our guys for continuing to fight in the fourth quarter, especially after losing Julian."

Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin thew for but ended the game watching from the sidelines with his right arm in a sling.

Day said he had no update on Sayin's status. "Obviously, that was a big blow to us, but the rest of the team picked it up for him," Day said."

The Buckeyes stayed in front after scoring on fourth and goal with 8 seconds left in the first half on a 2-yard TD reception by Bo Jackson. It marked the first time that Indiana has trailed at halftime of a home game with coach Curt Cignetti.

In a bruising game, Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover was also banged up, shaking his right arm in pain at one point, but he still managed to complete 20 of 40 for 296 yards and a touchdown — and would have had a seconnd if his pass hadn't drifted a little too much to the left for Marsh to stay in bounds on Indiana's last offensive play.

On the other side of the ball, Indiana mostly held Heisman Trophy favorite Jeremiah Smith in check until a 38-yard TD pass from Sayin with 12:46 left in the fourth quarter that put Ohio State up 19-7.

Smith's first catch came early in the second quarter, and he finished with four receptions for 68 yards.

"Just staying patient," Smith said. "My teammates and coaching staff have been telling me the whole game: Just be patient, it’s going to come, it’s going to come. Eventually, it came. So I’m happy I get to play today."

Amare Ferrell had two interceptions of Sayin, returning the first to the Buckeyes' 7 to set up Indiana's lone touchdown, a 7-yard run by Turbo Richard.
