Doesn’t Indiana ever play anyone great? It’s 4-0, and the only win of any note was last week against Northwestern in a 29-23 fight.
Yes, the Hoosiers do get some tough teams coming up later, but there’s no Oregon or Penn State, and the Ohio State and USC games are at home. But this week, enough is enough. The defending national champions are overdue to look like they’re a true threat again.
And no, Rutgers (1-3) doesn’t count as a team the Hoosiers should worry about, but it wasn’t awful in the 42-35 loss to USC before blowing away Howard last week.

Why Indiana Will Win
No, Indiana hasn’t been the monster it was last year quite yet, but it’s still a Curt Cignetti-coached team. If you’re not perfect against this bunch, forget it.
IU doesn’t get hit with penalties, there’s been just one turnover, and the defense isn’t allowing much of anything so far. Rutgers doesn’t get flagged, but the turnovers are a massive issue, with ten in the first three games – none against Howard.
Why Rutgers Will Win
The Rutgers offense found something against USC. The running game was good, the passing attack spread things out a bit, and the offensive line play has been just decent enough to generate a little bit of rhythm.
Not that this should matter too much to Indiana’s mindset, but it’s the team’s first road game of the season. If the Scarlet Knights can generate a little bit of positive momentum early on, the hope has to be to keep things moving like they did against the Trojans.

Indiana still won’t quite be the razor-sharp destruction machine of last year, but it won’t have to be. Josh Hoover and the Hoosier offense will be methodical, and the defense will take over in the second half to turn this into an ugly blowout.
