No. 3 Texas A&M (10-0, 7-0 SEC) pulled off an improbable and historic comeback after defeating South Carolina (3-7, 1-7 SEC) 31-30 in a game where the Aggies trailed 30-3 going into halftime, and looked like a defeated team with zero answers on both sides of the ball.

Well, whatever second-year head coach Mike Elko said, which, reportedly, wasn’t memorable on his part, the Aggies looked every bit like the No. 3-ranked team in the CFP rankings, led by Marcel Reed’s incredible second-half performance, completing 16-20 for 298 yards and three touchdowns after throwing two first-half interceptions.

On defense, Texas A&M’s pass rush forced a third and long on nearly every one of South Carolina’s offense drives in the second half, producing four sacks, while stopping the Gamecocks with just a minute remaining to seal the win, and escape what could have been a disastrous outcome for the Aggies’ CFP hopes.

One of the game’s surprise stars, sophomore wide receiver Ashton Bethel-Roman, finished second in receiving yards behind KC Concepcion (7 rec, 158 yards) with four catches for 139 yards, including his 39-yard touchdown catch during the Aggies’ scoring run. However, during his 76-yard reception that set up Reed’s third touchdown pass, Bethel-Roman was on the ground in pain, pulling on his ankle.

After the game, Bethel-Roman spoke to the media, stating that he “messed up his ankle” but should be fine.

“I wasn’t supposed to run that route, but it didn’t matter because we got the job done.” “I would call myself a really fast guy… Maybe I was a little tired. The last guy dove, but he missed. The way I stumbled, I messed up my ankle a little bit, but I’ll be fine.”

Current starting running back Rueben Owens, who finished with just 28 yards on eight carries, also left the game with an injury, which Mike Elko noted as “not a massive thing” heading into the new week. With senior running back Le’Veon Moss still out, potentially losing Owens against Samford on Saturday isn’t great, but it can be dealt with.
