Intriguing defensive lineman commits to Florida over Georgia

Jon Sumrall and the Florida Gators are starting the month of June hot on the recruiting trail. The Gators landed their second commitment of the month on Wednesday, with three-star defensive lineman Zahmar Tookes announcing his commitment.

Tookes is from Rochester, New York, and picked the Gators over the Penn State Nittany Lions, Georgia Bulldogs, and Nebraska Cornhuskers. He was set to officially visit all four programs, but decided to make his decision after taking his official visit to Florida last weekend.

He is ranked as the No. 680 overall player and No. 68 defensive lineman in the Rivals industry ranking. He is also the No. 3 player from New York. He is their second commitment in as many days after four-star offensive tackle Kennedee Jackson committed on Tuesday.

Tookes had a productive junior season at Brighton High School. He recorded 77 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, and one forced fumble in 14 games. He is their fourth commitment along the defensive line, joining three-star prospects Stive-Bentley Keumajou, Cain Can Norden, and De’Voun Kendrick.

Florida’s 2027 recruiting class is now ranked as the 5th best in the country and the 3rd best in the SEC by Rivals. The group is led by five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller, the No. 3 player in the country.
