Iowa graduate quarterback Mark Gronowski directed the Hawkeyes to a 40-16 dismantling of Nebraska on Black Friday.

Gronowski also ran his way right back into the Iowa quarterback record books. With his 64 rushing yards on 13 carries, Gronowski has now rushed for 491 rushing yards this season. That’s a new single-season record by an Iowa quarterback.

Gronowski surpassed Ed Podolak (450 rushing yards, 1966), Wilburn Hollis (477 yards, 1960) and Ken Ploen (487 yards, 1956) with his Friday performance to rewrite the record books.

Afterwards, Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz made sure to tip the cap to Gronowski on his record-setting day.

“It sounds like Mark’s set some records. I think it was Kenny Ploen, Wilburn Hollis and Ed Podolak that he moved by. That’s pretty good company right there. I’m not totally surprised. What a great individual he is. He’s just been a great addition to our team,” Ferentz said.

Following the win, Gronowski reflected on his Iowa journey.

“Just thinking about the entire journey as a whole, it’s been a lot of fun. I’ve kind of said this a lot, but, when I got here, I just tried to build relationships. Obviously, I was injured for the entire spring part of the year, so all I could do is really just learn the playbook, build relationships with the guys, hang out with them. And I feel like it was really great to do all that because all of a sudden, things started to roll when I got to start playing again.

“The relationships were strong, we continued to build those throughout the entire year. It’s been a lot of fun spending time with those O-linemen, those goofy guys up front. Overall, the biggest thing is just working with coach Lester. Working with coach Lester has been an awesome deal and it’s been great to work with him. He has so much to teach me. He taught me so much throughout this year and has me thinking a lot differently and deeper about the game of football in general. I think that’s going to really help me at the next level and obviously has helped me throughout the season as well,” Gronowski said.

Iowa now awaits its bowl destination, which will be announced on Dec. 7.
