Despite starting the season ranked inside the US LBM Coaches Poll, Iowa was ranked outside the top 25 in the initial USA TODAY Sports NCAA 1-138 Re-Rank. After a dominant 40-0 win over Northern Illinois to open the 2026 season, that is no longer the case.

With Week 1 of the college football season officially in the books, a new edition of the USA TODAY Sports NCAA 1-138 Re-Rank was released on Tuesday. The Hawkeyes jumped into the top 25, climbing three spots from their preseason ranking to No. 24 nationally.

It's an impressive feat for Iowa, which is still dealing with questions at the quarterback position. Even though there's still no definite answer there yet, the rest of the roster impressed enough last weekend to garner the attention of USA TODAY's Paul Myerberg. As the quarterbacks get more comfortable in the system, the Hawkeyes should have a great chance to climb higher on this list.

The top two of Notre Dame and Ohio State remain unchanged from last week after comfortable Week 1 wins. Oregon, Texas, and Indiana, in that order, round out the top five. The Big Ten also sees USC at No. 11, Penn State at No. 16, and Washington at No. 18.
