Iowa's Kirk Ferentz weighs in on potential CFP expansion

Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti reiterated his desire for the College Football Playoff to expand to a 24-team CFP on Tuesday during the league's media days in Chicago.

After the Big Ten commish doubled down on the proposed 24-team model, Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz was asked for his thoughts on potential expansion and how it might impact the Hawkeyes.

"I'll go back to when they went from two to four. My feeling then was if we're going to go to four, you may as well go to a bigger number at that stage. To me just having two teams play for it, there was some subjectivity there obviously. Revenue opportunity, all that other stuff that comes with Playoffs.

"But, when we went to four, it really I think kind of minimized or started to cheapen some of the bowl experiences, more players opting out, that type of thing. And silly me, I thought playing in the Orange Bowl or the Rose Bowl or whatever was a big deal, but that attitude started to grow with that," Ferentz said.

The longest-tenured FBS coach is in favor of expanding the CFP field to either 16 or 24 teams.

"So, my attitude is, why not go bigger? Whether you want to make it 16 or 24, I'm in favor of 24, certainly. The other part of the story is I think our focus needs to be on some other issues that are probably bigger to college football right now than the Playoff discussion. But, totally in favor of 24 to answer the question. I think it benefits everybody, not just a school like ours," Ferentz said.
