There are only so many ways to describe the rise of Indiana football under Curt Cignetti, its head coach of two years. “Historic” is the obvious, bland one, “meteoric” is a bit more exciting and addresses its sudden nature or you could just say “unreal” because that’s how this all feels.

The Hoosiers are the sport’s reigning national champion, a concept that probably hadn’t entered the consciousness of this fanbase or just about any other in any place other than the college football video game series.

So what does that mean for Cignetti, the man who accomplished in two years what several other great coaches couldn’t do in several in far more ready-made places? Is he college football’s best coach? Indiana fans sure seem to think so, based on the results of our reacts survey:

Fans were asked if Cignetti’s current accomplishments already merit such a designation or if he has more to prove. He’s one of just for active FBS head coaches to have won a national title alongside Georgia’s Kirby Smart, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and Ohio State’s Ryan Day.

Can he add to his already impressive legacy with a repeat of the 2025 season in 2026?
