Former LSU football quarterback Max Johnson will play another year of college football in 2026. Johnson will be moving on to his fourth school after transferring to Georgia Southern.
Johnson's commitment may have flown under the radar last month, especially for LSU fans who may not follow Sun Belt football. Johnson signed with LSU in 2020 as a four-star quarterback from Watkinsville, Georgia. He saw significant playing time as a true freshman thanks to LSU's instability at the quarterback position.
As a sophomore in 2021, Johnson was LSU's QB1 for the entirety of the regular season, but LSU's season went off the rails and resulted in the firing of head coach Ed Orgeron. With Orgeron out and Brian Kelly taking over, Johnson hit the transfer portal and landed at Texas A&M.
Johnson appeared in 12 games at A&M, throwing for 1,969 yards and 12 touchdowns. But again, Johnson was in the wrong place at the wrong time and his head coach, Jimbo Fisher, was fired.
That led Johnson to transfer to North Carolina and play for head coach Mack Brown. Johnson began 2024 as UNC's starter, but his season was cut short after an injury in game one.
And again, Johnson saw a head coach get fired as UNC moved on from Mack Brown. This time, Johnson didn't transfer when Bill Belichick took over. Johnson returned from injury and lost the QB battle to transfer Gio Lopez. Johnson appeared in four games last season, completing 53 passes for 432 yards and two scores.
Now set for his seventh year of college football, and his final year of eligibility (probably), Johnson will compete for the starting job again and look to finish his career on a high note.
