With the North Carolina football program preparing for the 2026 season under head coach Bill Belichick, there is an insider who is throwing the idea out there that the coach could be on the hot seat. After the departure of North Carolina football’s Michael Lombardi due to a human resources complaint, the turmoil of the program is catching the attention of this senior reporter.
In Ross Dellenger’s latest piece for Yahoo Sports, which details the coaches on the hot seat, he mentions Belichick as one, expressing that the results of the experiment around the coach “don’t bode well for the future,” despite it being in the early stages.
“The Belichick experiment is still in the early phase, but the results don’t bode well for the future — on and off the field. The school suspended general manager Michael Lombardi for a human resources matter, and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, Bill’s son, is out with a personal matter,” Dellenger wrote.

“Meanwhile, the Tar Heels get a prime spot to kick off college football with a Week Zero game this Saturday in Ireland against TCU,” Dellenger continued. “The country will be watching, and so will first-year athletic director Steve Newmark, who most certainly wants to see improvement and progress from Year 1. Can the Tar Heels show it? They play at Clemson and host Notre Dame, Miami, and Louisville this year.”
At any rate, Belichick has the chance to prove any doubter wrong with the opening game coming right around the corner this Saturday against TCU in Dublin, Ireland. The Tar Heels are looking to improve after finishing with a 4-8 record.
