No. 3 Texas A&M (8-0, 5-0 SEC) has lived up to and more than the preseason expectations bestowed upon them, starting 8-0 for the first time since 1992, while Saturday’s 49-25 blowout win over LSU was the program’s first win in Death Valley since 1994.
Led by starting quarterback Marcel Reed’s impressive season, already accounting for 23 touchdowns through the air and on the ground, Texas A&M’s offense has been prolific, and after scoring 40-plus points in four SEC road games, the Aggies tied the SEC record, which is impressive given the lack of receiving talent going back to last season.
With the additions of transfer wide receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver, who have combined for 1,261 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns, Marcel Reed has the necessary speed, quickness, and separation to beat nearly every coverage thrown the Aggies’ way.
However, Texas A&M’s rushing attack, currently averaging 200 yards per game, has been steady and productive since senior back Le’Veon Moss injured his ankle, led by sophomore Reuben Owens and freshman Jamarion Morrow, who has become a weapon in the passing game as well.
On defense, Texas A&M’s pass rush exploded during SEC play and currently leads the nation in sacks (32), with senior edge Cashius Howell’s 10 sacks and 30-plus pressures. The defensive line’s elite play has allowed linebackers Taurean York, Daymion Sanford, and Scooby Williams to dominate against the run, while the secondary has been kept clean throughout the season.
This weekend, Texas A&M is on its second bye week and will face No. 19 Missouri on the road next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Regardless of what happens in SEC play, the Aggies will remain the only undefeated team in the conference, and look to finish 12-0 for the first time in program history.
