One of college football’s most-played and richest rivalries is set to be renewed by Ole Miss football and Mississippi State in Week 14.
It, however, just isn’t happening on the day Ole Miss and Mississippi State (and college football) fans are accustomed to it being on.
For the second consecutive season, and just the third time in the last 13 seasons, the Magnolia State rivals will meet on the gridiron on the Friday after Thanksgiving while the country starts their holiday shopping with Black Friday deals.
Lane Kiffin, who is expected to announce his decision regarding his coaching future after the Egg Bowl, is 4-1 in the annual rivalry game in his six seasons at Ole Miss. Led by Doak Walker Award finalist Kewan Lacy, the sixth-ranked Rebels (No. 7 in College Football Playoff rankings) are coming off a 34-24 win over Florida before their second bye week of the season last week.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 49-27 loss to Missouri in Week 12, the sixth loss in SEC play for Jeff Lebby’s squad this season.

Why was the Egg Bowl moved from Thanksgiving?
The change in date of the Egg Bowl from Thanksgiving to Black Friday has to do with the SEC’s TV-rights deal with ESPN and ABC, which are both owned by the Walt Disney Company.
As previously noted by the Clarion-Ledger, part of the USA TODAY Network, when the SEC was coming to terms with ESPN and ABC, the idea of playing the Egg Bowl on Black Friday instead of Thanksgiving was brought to the table.
“In that negotiation, ABC came to us and said we want this date, and we wanna play at this time,” Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter said at a June 2024 event to Ole Miss alumni. “And we actually did have a little negotiating power on another game that we got scheduled at the time we wanted on the road.”
