Jackson State football could see the return of starting quarterback JaCobian Morgan for its Week 13 matchup against Alcorn State.
Morgan suffered an injury to his left foot in Jackson State‘s loss to Grambling State on Oct. 25 and has missed the last three games.
Morgan was seen without a boot during JSU’s win over Bethune-Cookman on Nov. 15.
At his weekly press conference, coach T.C. Taylor said Morgan will return to practice on Nov. 18 and that the staff will evaluate him throughout the week ahead of the Tigers’ game vs Alcorn State on Nov. 22 (2:30 p.m., ESPN+).
“He’ll be back in practice tomorrow, so we’ll move him around a little bit,” Taylor said Nov. 17. “Hard to say where he’ll be when Friday gets here, so we’ll get to examine him these next three days out here on the football field and see where we’re at.”
Morgan’s return would be a boost for JSU (8-2, 6-1 SWAC) as it enters a critical rivalry matchup with Alcorn State (5-6, 4-3). With a win JSU will secure the SWAC East division title, earning a spot in the SWAC Championship Game Dec. 6 and possibly hosting it.
Taylor said Jackson State wasn’t trying to rush Morgan back on the field.
“We’re going to make sure we protect him, though,” Taylor said. “You don’t want to put him out there too quick if he’s not healthy. We want to trust our trainers, trust the doctors and just see how he moves this week.”
In Morgan’s absence, freshman quarterback Jared Lockhart has led Jackson State to three consecutive wins over Florida A&M, Mississippi Valley State and Bethune-Cookman.
Lockhart has totaled 505 yards passing, four touchdowns and one interception on a 65.5% completion rate and rushed for 100 yards in those games. If Morgan isn’t available Nov. 22, Lockhart would continue as the starter.
In the six games he played in before his injury, Morgan completed 61.2% of his passes for 1,183 yards and 11 touchdowns with two interceptions. He also rushed for 265 yards and two touchdowns on 40 carries.
