A clear need for the Michigan Wolverines this offseason was wide receiver. The unit has underperformed for the past two seasons, as a lack of development put the health of the room in jeopardy.

Kyle Whittingham attacked the transfer portal this offseason to earn a few pass-catching options for quarterback Bryce Underwood. He and wide receiver Andrew Marsh helped in the recruitment of Jaime Ffrench, a talented young receiver who will compete for a starting role this season.

The story so far

Ffrench was a borderline Top 50 prospect in the 2025 recruiting class. With loads of offers from SEC programs and a bid from Ohio State, Ffrench ended up choosing Texas.

As a true freshman last year, Ffrench played in four games while maintaining his redshirt status. However, one of the games he played in was against his future teammates in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Egev. He posted just one catch for six yards in his freshman campaign.

Ffrench was quick to enter the portal when the season concluded, and both Marsh and Underwood started their recruitment on social media.

“Man, they were a big influence on me,” Ffrench told The Michigan Daily on Underwood and Marsh’s influence on his transfer to Michigan. “I knew those guys in the recruitment process, always going to camp, 7-on-7, (Marsh) was like my best friend in the recruitment process. So just rekindling the flame of how I see it and just getting to work and handling the business on the big stage.”

Outlook moving forward

Having relationships with a couple top guys on offense is important, but Ffrench still has to earn a starting position. It’s assumed Marsh will continue to be Underwood’s favorite option, and Whittingham brought J.J. Buchanan with him from Utah; those two will likely see the most playing time in Jason Beck’s system.

Whittingham admitted the Wolverines are still looking to solidify the spots behind Buchanan and Marsh, and Ffrench is expected to be among the favorites to land one of those roles. True freshman Salesi Moa will be another name to watch here as well.

Either way, Ffrench will be a contributor and a trusted option for Underwood this fall, and that’s exactly what he will need to take the next step. Last year, Underwood was laser-focused on Marsh, and their relationship was apparent. For the young Michigan quarterback to be better this fall, he’ll need more options to get the ball to, and there’s a lot of hope Ffrench can be one of those guys.
