Vanderbilt football continues to feel optimistic about freshman quarterback Jared Curtis playing against Ole Miss after he was listed as probable on the initial injury report Oct. 7.
"He got through today OK," coach Clark Lea said Oct. 8. "Obviously, part of this, we practice in the morning, you're kind of seeing how they respond in the afternoon. Hopefully just continues to come back and feels good. He's had a full week of practice. I'm feeling good about where he is.
The Commodores (3-2, 0-2 SEC) are taking on No. 11 Ole Miss (3-1, 1-1) at FirstBank Stadium on Oct. 10 (2:30 p.m. CT, ESPN).
Curtis has appeared in four games, with two starts. He is 63-for-98 passing for 746 yards and four touchdowns, plus 41 rushing attempts for 133 yards. He missed a 38-14 loss to Georgia with an injury suffered in a loss to Auburn. Blaze Berlowitz started that game at quarterback.
Offensive lineman Mitchell Smith was also listed as doubtful on the injury report. Smith has a knee injury, Lea said.
"It's not a big injury, but it's enough to slow him down right now and perhaps be something we need to address," Lea said. " … He hasn't been able to make it through practice."
Smith has been a key reserve offensive lineman as a true freshman.
