One of the all-time great Auburn quarterbacks is being recognized for a great career. Earlier this week, former Tigers quarterback Jason Campbell was named one of the latest inductees to the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame. Campbell joins Roman Harper (Alabama), Anthony "Booger" McFarland (LSU), Harry Agganis (Boston College), and coach Norv Turner. The induction ceremony will take place on May 3.
Campbell is one of the more talented Auburn quarterbacks over the last 30 years. He was the signal caller for the 2004 team that posted an undefeated season, but was held out of the BCS National Championship. That was mostly due to USC and Oklahoma starting the season at the top of the polls, and neither team took a loss during that regular season. Auburn defeated Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl 16-13 to finish 13-0, and the Tigers also won the SEC Championship.
He finished his Auburn career with 7,299 yards and 45 touchdowns. He is still one of the all-time leaders for Auburn with a career completion percentage of 64.6. During his senior season in 2004, he completed 69.6% of his passes and threw for 2,700 yards and 20 touchdowns. He was named the 2004 SEC Offensive Player of the Year after the season. It cannot be overlooked how talented that Auburn backfield was with Campbell, along with running backs Carnell "Cadillac" Williams and Ronnie Brown. All three players were drafted in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft, with Campbell being drafted by Washington.
It was not always great for Campbell and Auburn during his time on the Plains. He had a different offensive coordinator each year with the Tigers. It was not until Al Borges was hired by head coach Tommy Tuberville that everything clicked for Campbell. It is fair to wonder what kind of career he would have had with more time under Borges. His potential was shown during this sophomore season in 2002 when Bobby Petrino was the offensive coordinator.
During that season, Campbell threw for 1,215 yards and 11 touchdowns after taking over the starting spot from Daniel Cobb. Auburn closed out the season with wins over Alabama and Penn State to end the season with a 9-4 record. That resulted in Auburn having National Championship expectations for the 2003 season. However, Petrino left the team after 2002 to become the new head coach at Louisville. Instead of hiring a new offensive coordinator, Tuberville promoted Steve Ensminger and Hugh Nall to coordinate the offense. That move did not work out, and Auburn struggled offensively. The infamous Jetgate occurred the week of the Iron Bowl, but a win over Alabama saved Tuberville's job.
Campbell would go on to play ten seasons in the NFL with Washington, the Oakland Raiders, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, and Cincinnati Bengals. During his NFL career, he threw for 16,771 yards and 87 touchdowns. He started 79 games during his career with a record of 32-47. He is now the color analyst for the Auburn Radio Network alongside play-by-play broadcaster Andy Burcham.
