"The secret is in the dirt," Cowboys tight end Jason Witten used to say.
Well, there must be something about the dirt in Norman, Oklahoma. Because now there are two Wittens who will be taking the field for the Sooners, though one of them won't arrive for a while.
Cooper Witten, the son of the Cowboys legend and a five-star linebacker in his own right, has committed to play at the University of Oklahoma as part of the 2027 recruiting class.
His dad Jason, the 11-time Pro Bowler and all-time Cowboys franchise leader in receptions, receiving yards, and games played, was hired in January as Oklahoma's tight ends coach. Now 43, he had previously been the head football coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Tex., leading that school to back-to-back state championships in 2023 and 2024.
Cooper played under his dad for Liberty Christian in both of those seasons. He'll return for his senior season in the fall and then graduate high school in the spring of 2027.
Considered by many outlets to be the top linebacker recruit in the entire 2027 recruiting class and among the top 50 prospects in the nation at any position, Cooper had offers from over two dozen schools, including Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Michigan, Ohio State, Clemson, Texas, Notre Dame, and even Tennessee, his father's alma mater.

With the commitment, the Sooners reportedly now have the top recruiting class in all of college football, with head coach Brent Venables and his staff expecting to be top contenders in the sport for the foreseeable future.
Cooper's older brother CJ also played for Liberty Christian and is currently a linebacker at Rice.
