Jeremiah Smith’s ‘Best Player in the Country’ Claim Turns Heads in Heisman Race

Jeremiah Smith strengthened his Ohio State Heisman Trophy case with another huge performance and a memorable celebration. The star receiver delivered record-breaking numbers, once again showing why he is regarded as one of college football’s best offensive players.

Smith broke free for a signature 57-yard touchdown before striking the Heisman pose in front of the crowd. His postgame comments reinforced that statement, making it clear he belongs among the nation’s top award contenders.

Wide receivers rarely factor into the Heisman conversation, with only DeVonta Smith winning the award at the position since 1956. Smith turned in another historic outing Saturday, catching 11 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns as No. 5 Ohio State beat No. 14 Iowa 31-14 at Kinnick Stadium. His second touchdown, a 57-yard catch-and-run past Iowa cornerback Anthony Hawkins in the third quarter, made him the program’s all-time leader in both receiving touchdowns and receptions.

SportsCenter captured the moment as it happened. “Four let ’em know Jeremiah Smith hit the Heisman pose after breaking Ohio State’s all-time REC TD record,” SportsCenter posted.

The performance extended Smith’s streak to back-to-back 200-yard games, following a 217-yard, four-touchdown outing against Illinois the week before. Through five games this season, he leads the nation with 44 catches for 823 yards and seven touchdowns. That pace already runs ahead of Alabama’s DeVonta Smith, the last receiver to win the award, who had fewer yards and touchdowns through five games during his Heisman season in 2020.

Smith’s confidence matched his production when reporters asked him about his Heisman standing after the game.

Ohio State led 24-6 when the record-breaking play unfolded. Quarterback Julian Sayin found Smith on a slant that turned into a 57-yard sprint to the end zone, the signature play of an afternoon Ohio State had already flagged as a statement outing for its Heisman hopeful. Sayin finished 20 of 27 for 324 yards and three touchdowns, with Smith accounting for nearly two-thirds of his receiving yardage.

“You’ve just got to let the Heisman voters or whoever it is know that I’m the best player in the country. I’ve got to be there,” Smith told reporters after the game.

His record-breaking performance and unwavering confidence keep Ohio State’s national championship hopes and his Heisman campaign tied directly to his production the rest of the way.
