Jets 'not going to panic' about Jason Sanders, kicking situation after poor preseason finale

The Jets wrapped up their 2026 preseason on Friday with a 23-6 loss to the crosstown (and cross-conference) New York Giants. With all key starters rested, it was a game where the spots on the fringes of the Jets' 53-man roster were likely decided.

Jason Sanders didn't enter preseason in a position battle for the title of Jets kicker. However, after his dismal performance against the Giants, he might have forced the team to look for another option ahead of the Jets' season opener against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Sep. 13.

Sanders missed his PAT after Chip Trayanum rushed for a 1-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Then, in the fourth quarter, his 54-yard field goal attempt didn't even reach the uprights.

"I didn’t like the fact that we missed these field goals," said head coach Aaron Glenn postgame. "The thing is, we’re not going to panic, and we’re going to make sure we make the right decisions."

After seven strong seasons with the Miami Dolphins from 2018 to 2024, Sanders missed the entirety of the 2025 season with a hip injury. He was released during the offseason, and was claimed off waivers by the Jets in early June of this year.

"Jason’s been good for us, he’s been good in practice, so I'm going to evaluate that and see what direction we'll go," the Jets head honcho asserted.

A first-team All-Pro in 2020, Sanders' 84.3% career field goal conversion rate is 14th best among all active NFL kickers with at least 100 career field goal attempts. Among that same field, Sanders' 96.6% career extra point conversion rate is tied for eighth best.

"Either we fix those issues, or we get the right person in here," Glenn concluded.
