Jim Tressel warns of ‘great equalizer’ in Ohio State-Michigan game

M’s are disappearing around Columbus as Ohio State’s football team prepares for its annual showdown against Michigan (or is that -ichigan?). No reason to give the team from the north any sort of advantage.

But former Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel warned of a “great equalizer” that no amount of offensive and defensive game-planning could prepare Ryan Day, Julian Sayin and crew to handle. Here’s what he said:

Standings, records and rankings don’t matter when the Buckeyes and Wolverines face off. (Ohio State is 11-0 and Michigan is 9-2 heading into the Nov. 29 game, for the record.) The rivalry has existed for well over 100 years.

But Tressel, who went 9-1 against Michigan during his tenure in Columbus, warned of one factor that could put both teams on level footing — Mother Nature.

“Sometimes weather’s the great equalizer,” Tressel said before OSU’s dominant 42-9 home win against Rutgers on Nov. 22, according to Sports Illustrated. “But there’s nothing like that last regular-season game.”

Late November weather in the Midwest can be wildly unpredictable, but Ohio’s current lieutenant governor is right to be wary of the weather. The Thanksgiving week weather might be the worst of the fall so far.

Thanksgiving week weather, forecast for Ohio State vs. Michigan

The Thanksgiving week weather in Ohio, Michigan and across much of the country could feel more like peak winter than late autumn.

Another blast of arctic air moving toward the U.S. will bring the potential for bitter cold and heavy snow accumulations — possibly beginning during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and lasting into early December.

Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day talks to former head coach and current Ohio lieutenant governor Jim Tressel prior to the NCAA football game against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Ohio Stadium in Columbus on Nov. 22, 2025.

The storm could wreak havoc on Thanksgiving travel, but it’s powerful enough that it might last into the final days of November.

AccuWeather’s daily forecast for the Detroit area predicts clouds and temperatures just above freezing on Nov. 29. Snow and rain are not currently in the forecast for the OSU-Michigan game, but snow is predicted on Thanksgiving and the day after The Game.
