The NCAA landscape will undoubtedly look different next season, with the possibility of the College Football Playoff expanding. The deadline for that decision was extended to January 23, 2026. The current 12-team format may expand to 14 or 16 teams. We’ll also see new faces in new places.
Several programs have made head-coaching changes. That includes what has become an unfortunate set of circumstances in Ann Arbor. Without getting into greater detail, we’ll pivot but mention something interesting. How did the Baltimore Ravens head coach become part of the discussion?
John Harbaugh is linked to the now vacant Michigan Wolverines head-coaching job.
Longtime rivals Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh are the NFL’s longest-tenured head coaches. The Pittsburgh Steelers‘ leader was given the reins in 2007. Harbaugh was hired by the Ravens one year later. This is the first time, however, that both have been named coaches on the hot seat.
Both guys would land on their feet if that were to happen. What struggling NFL team wouldn’t want a Hall of Fame, Super Bowl-winning head coach?
Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer recently penned his take on ten candidates for the Michigan Wolverines‘ now-vacant head-coaching job. A still-employed John Harbaugh made the list among nine other names. Here’s Fischer’s reasoning for naming Coach Harbaugh.
“Could another Harbaugh take over in Ann Arbor? Like his brother, he has tons of ties to the area and the school through his father and fondly enjoyed being along for the ride as an observer two years ago when Michigan won it all. Given how things are going in Baltimore this season, a mutual parting of ways in the NFL to get a soft landing here makes sense.”
Interim head coach Francis “Biff” Poggi is currently leading the Wolverines after Sherrone Moore’s firing. Other candidates include Kalen DeBoer, Brian Kelly, Kalani Sitake, Brian Daboll, Jedd Fisch, Jason Eck, Lance Leipold, Jake Dickert, and former Michigan assistant Jesse Minter.
There isn’t much reason to believe the smoke will lead to any real fires here, at least not right now. Remember, John Harbaugh is still employed and seems happy with his current job as Ravens head coach.
