The Oklahoma Sooners' offense is heading into Year 2 under offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterback John Mateer. The two were brought in before the 2025 season following a disastrous offensive season in 2024.

That season resulted in offensive coordinator Seth Littrell being fired during the year and quarterback Jackson Arnold departing in the transfer portal to the Auburn Tigers. On the broad scale, things were better in 2025. The Sooners' offense did just enough to help Oklahoma get back to the College Football Playoff.

But Oklahoma still needs to make improvements on that side of the ball. The Sooners were ranked near the bottom in total offense at No. 92, and they were one of the worst running teams in the country. Mateer details after practice why he thinks the offense will be better this season.

"I think we've all developed the right way," Mateer said via OU Insider. "A lot of the detail we need to get cleaned up. Me, one year in the SEC, you just learn about how much how important everything is and all the little details. So, that's the biggest change."

The biggest difference for Oklahoma's offense heading into 2026 could simply be experience. Mateer and Arbuckle both went through the challenges of playing in the SEC for the first time last season, and that experience should help them make the necessary adjustments.

The Sooners don't need to become the highest-scoring offense in the country to compete for a championship. With Brent Venables' defense expected to remain one of the best units in college football, the offense just needs to become more consistent, especially in the running game.

If Mateer can take the next step and the offense can turn those lessons from Year 1 into production, Oklahoma could have the balance needed to make a serious run at a national championship.
