Johnny Majors' coaching tree: Curt Cignetti

No. 1 Indiana (14-0) will play No. 5 Oregon (13-1) in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Friday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The winner of the College Football Playoff semifinal will advance to a national championship game.

Kickoff between the Hoosiers and Ducks is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST (ESPN).

Second-year Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti has coaching ties to former Tennessee football head coach Johnny Majors.

Following his tenure as head coach at Tennessee (1977-92), Majors returned to Pittsburgh, where he guided the Panthers to a 1976 national championship. He was head coach at Pittsburgh from 1993-96 during his second tenure. During his second stint with the Panthers, Cignetti served as quarterbacks and tight ends coach under Majors.

Cignetti remained on Pittsburgh's coaching staff after former Tennessee offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Walt Harris was named head coach following Majors' final season in 1996.

Cignetti, who played quarterback at West Virginia from 1979-82, began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Pittsburgh from 1983-84 under head coach Foge Fazio.

Cignetti's first game with the Panthers as a graduate assistant was at Tennessee. Majors and the Vols defeated Pittsburgh, 13-3, on Sept, 3, 1983 at Neyland Stadium. The contest was also Harris' first as Tennessee's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

After Pittsburgh, Cignetti served as quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Davidson in 1985. He was also quarterbacks coach at Rice (1986-88) and Temple (1989-92). Following his second tenure at Pittsburgh, he served as quarterbacks and tight ends coach, as well as recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State from 2000-06.

Cignetti was hired in the SEC as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Alabama (2007-11) under head coach Nick Saban.

He was a first-time head coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania from 2011-16 before serving as head coach at Elon (2017-18), James Madison (2019-23) and Indiana.
