Jon Sumrall, who started his coaching career at Troy going 23-4, has spent the past two seasons in the American Athletic Conference with Tulane, where he continued his success.

During his time at Tulane, taking over for a good coach in Willie Fritz, Sumrall led the Green Wave to two straight conference championship games. Following the 2024 season, Tulane lost the game against Army, while in 2025, the team was able to defeat North Texas to win the conference and gain a spot in the FBS playoffs. The playoffs did not go well as Tulane suffered a 41-10 defeat to Ole Miss, but his ability to take over the program and keep it at the top of the conference led him to getting an SEC job at Florida.

A good but not all expected hire by Florida, Sumrall is the second straight Gators coach to come from the Group of Six ranks. This notion left fans weary. That was before hearing his opening press conference changed their minds. Where Billy Napier was an elite recruiter, he lacked SEC ability in game day coaching. He was able to get the recruits who would make up a majority of Sumrall’s first team. He was unable to utilize them to their fullest.

Sumrall, on the other hand, excels on game day and being able to work with the talent in the cupboard left by Napier can only lead to more success than he may have had on a completely dismantled program.

The Gators also brought in significant transfers. The main two being QB Aaron Philo from Georgia Tech who will compete with returning redshirt Freshman Tramell Jones Jr. for the starting position and Eric Singleton, the talented WR from Auburn who will add to the receiving depth on the roster alongside returner Varnell Brown III. But the biggest transfer will be new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech who almost led the Yellow Jackets to an ACC title game in 2025. His first course of action after getting hired was to convince Aaron Philo to come with him. He succeeded and if he beats out Jones Jr., he can bring this team back from the dregs.

If he does not beat out Jones, he will be a great mentor for Jones Jr. in learning the offense with which he is already experienced. Either way, Sumrall and his QB selection will be ecstatic to have Jadan Baugh at RB. One of the best freshmen in the country last season, Baugh is set to be one of the best running backs in the country in 2026.

Sumrall, a former linebacker at Kentucky, will have talent to work with. This includes LJ McCray, a five-star recruit who was convinced to return under the new regime. A smart move considering the ability of Sumrall to get the most out of defensive players.

McCray will hope to have a good sophomore season under Sumrall in helping a talented squad hold down opponents while the offense gets their swamp legs.

If the defense can hold up their end of the bargain and the offense under Faulkner can mesh quickly, Florida has the talent and desire to make a push for a berth in the FBS Playoffs following the upcoming season.

With a lot of help from Napier, Sumrall would have accomplished what AD Scott Strickland and Florida hired him to do.
