Florida football head coach Jon Sumrall is earning his early taste of the SEC through media days. Sumrall aims to build the Gators back into a national power amid the NIL and portal era. Yet Sumrall’s exit closely mirrors Lane Kiffin leaving Ole Miss for LSU in this regard.

Sumrall also needed to leave his College Football Playoff team behind in Tulane to land his SEC opportunity. Kiffin, though, jammed from one SEC power to join a longtime rival of the Rebels.

Sumrall still acknowledged the parallels drawn between he and Kiffin in addressing his own departure.

“Well, I’d say no two decisions are alike. You know, like Lane and I are friends, and Lane and I talked several times through the process of October, November about what it was looking like for both of our schedules of how things were going to unfold,” Sumrall told reporters.

But again, Sumrall dropped this contradiction involving he and Kiffin.

“He’s like, ‘you and I are going through the same thing in November.’ I’m like, ‘no, Lane, we’re not. If you leave, you’re leaving an SEC school to go to SEC school. It’s a little different. I’m leaving Tulane.’ It was challenging to do it,” Sumrall said.

Kiffin reportedly wanted to continue coaching at Ole Miss through the postseason but that plan never fell through. Pete Golding took over and led the Rebels into the CFP semifinals.

Sumrall pulled the opposite: Tulane allowed him to coach against Ole Miss in the first round, ultimately becoming his final game with the Green Wave.
