Just a day after that Tulane coach Jon Sumrall was reported as Florida football’s top choice as its next head coach, Sumrall, one of the top names in this year’s coaching cycle, has reportedly withdrawn his name from another job.
According to FootballScoop’s John Brice, Sumrall withdrew his name from Auburn’s coaching search.
That decision would be significant given Sumrall’s ties to the state of Alabama, as he led Troy to back-to-back Sun Belt titles before leading the Green Wave. According to various outlets, Sumrall is expected to make his decision on Sunday, Nov. 30, partly because he is waiting on the outcome of Lane Kiffin’s coaching future, a decision that’s supposed to be made Saturday evening.
Kiffin is expected to choose between Ole Miss and LSU, as it was reported yesterday that Florida is no longer in the running for him.
Sumrall, 43, is one of the hottest up-and-coming names in the coaching ranks. In the last four years, Sumrall has had successful stints at Tulane and Troy, where he has put together a combined record of 41-11 and either played for or won a conference title each season. Notably, Sumrall is 1-6 all-time against ranked opponents.
The Green Wave have a chance to secure a spot in the AAC title game if it beats Charlotte later tonight.
Sumrall, who played linebacker at Kentucky, is no stranger to the SEC he has had assistant coaching jobs at his alma mater, as well as at Ole Miss. After serving as a grad assistant at Kentucky, his first coaching job was at San Diego before having stints as an assistant at both Troy and Tulane.
