Everybody gets caught up with what a head football coach does in his first season, and rightfully so at a school like the University of Florida.
Head coach Jon Sumrall came in with high expectations, hoping to build a contender from day one. In the first couple of weeks of the season, Florida seemed well-positioned to do exactly that.
Unfortunately, over the past two weeks, the Gators have been among the most disappointing teams in college football, losing 45-17 to the University of Missouri and then falling 38-19 to South Carolina.
This was disappointing from top to bottom, though we also need to give Sumrall time to bring in the players he wants, including a full high school class.
In this era of college football, there are always concerns that guys won't be able to do what they want in their first season.
With the transfer portal, losing high school recruits from the prior head coach, and much more, I think giving a coach about two years is the best plan. Sumrall, however, won't make excuses about how long it's going to take. Instead, he believes it's only a matter of time before Florida builds a “monster,” as it has landed some of the top recruits in the country in recent weeks.
"I have a strong feeling that we can build a monster here," Sumrall said. "I've said that. That doesn't always happen just as fast as you want it to, but we're getting there. And I think you're seeing belief by certain players, who are talented players, that are gonna come do this with us for the long haul."
"It's been fun for me to get those because I'm like, 'You're the right kind of guy because you're wired for what we have to do to get this thing where we want it to be,'" Sumrall said, per the Palm Beach Post. "But I'm excited about the direction recruiting's going. We got a lot of great things to recruit to here. And I have — my belief in what we can build here has not wavered at all."
It's promising that Florida is the team it is right now, even without Sumrall being able to bring in all of his guys.
I know fans aren't very happy with what's happened over the past two weeks, but I still think this is a very talented team. Sometimes, we just have to tip our caps to what teams can do, and that's exactly what happened in those two losses.
Looking ahead, there's a lot to be excited about, and I trust Sumrall to build that winner.
