Jon Sumrall Wasting No Time Sustainably Turning the Gators Around

Florida head coach Jon Sumrall is wasting no time at all turning the Gators into a sustained winner. 

It is truly one of Sumrall's superpowers that in his last two stops, he has gotten to a program and made it a winner immediately. When he took the Troy program over, he won 12 games his first year and 11 games his second year.

His worst year as a head coach was year one at Tulane, when he had only nine wins in 2024. He quickly corrected that in 2025 when he ripped off an 11-3 record and his season ended in the College Football Playoff.

This coach is a winner, and he does it on the field between the white lines and on the recruiting trail. 

We have yet to see what the Gators will be on the field, but the culture that he has already built is nothing short of spectacular. First, he was able to retain several of the Gators' key contributors from last year, including Jadan Baugh at running back and Myles Graham on defense. Those are a couple of the key members of the team, and thankfully, they decided to stay here amidst all of the changeover.

Then, he attacked the transfer portal as best he could. The portal opened up, and Sumrall was still the head coach of a team playing in the College Football Playoffs. He tried for a couple of weeks to be the head coach at both places, which was a challenge, but paid dividends. 

He acquired 29 transfers after the Gators lost 59 total guys. The math doesn't check out here, but Sumrall was able to at least keep the bones of his program together and have enough people to train and put out there on the field. Their class ranked 18th overall in the country while his players max out as 3-star transfer prospects.

Sumrall wasn't done there. He and his staff attacked the 2027 high school class just as hard and have put together quite the class.

They currently have 26 commits, and the class as a whole is ranked No. 3 in the SEC. They have one five-star recruit to go along with 16 four-star guys and 10 three-stars or lower. They trail just Texas A&M and Oklahoma at this point, simply because they have more five-star recruits than Florida.

Florida absolutely got it right with the hiring of Jon Sumrall and he has already put to building blocks in place to make this storied program competitive again.
