The pipeline of talent from Utah to Michigan football is beginning to flow. The latest move? Defensive lineman Jonah Lea’ea is transferring to Ann Arbor, he announced on Friday, Jan. 9.
The 6-foot-5, 271-pound defensive tackle just finished a productive redshirt sophomore season in which he recorded 38 tackles (including 2½ for loss), one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and a pass breakup.
The move was first reported by On3.
Lea’ea, who played at prep powerhouse Bishop Gorman High School in Nevada, played in all 12 of Utah’s regular-season games and entered the transfer portal on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
He has clear ties to the new U-M coaching staff – he committed to new Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham out of high school and his position coach at Utah, Lewis Powell, has also joined the staff in Ann Arbor.
He’s the second former Utah player to commit to the Wolverines in two days, joining star defensive edge John Henry Daley.
