Josh Heupel is preparing for his sixth season as Tennessee’s football head coach. Since 2021, he has guided the Vols to a 45-20 (24-16 SEC) record.

Tennessee has appeared in four bowl games and one College Football Playoff appearance during his tenure. The Vols lost at Ohio State in the first round of the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff during the 2024 season.

From 2021-23, a four-team playoff format was used for his first three seasons at Tennessee.

On Monday, Heupel discussed his preference for a College Football Playoff format with Chris Low on On3. The sixth-year head coach prefers a 24-team playoff format.

“The way college football is constantly changing, that probably makes the most sense,” Heupel told On3 of a 24-team College Football Playoff.

Tennessee will kick off spring football practices March 16. The Vols’ annual Orange & White Game will conclude spring practices at Neyland Stadium on April 11.

Tennessee will open its 2026 football season on Sept. 5 versus Furman at Neyland Stadium.
