The Tennessee Volunteers concluded a disappointing 2025 college football season, finishing with an 8-5 record under head coach Josh Heupel. This followed a successful 2024 season where they achieved a 10-3 record and made their inaugural appearance in the College Football Playoff.
Heupel, who is entering his sixth year as head coach, is focused on leading the team back to the postseason tournament in 2026. He has a challenging task ahead, especially after losing star wide receiver Chris Brazzell II, who ended the year with 1,017 yards and nine touchdowns. Brazzell has decided to enter the draft after the season.
The Volunteers received good news on Sunday about adding depth to their roster. They secured the commitment of former Idaho State Bengals wide receiver Ian Duarte.
Duarte played three seasons at Idaho State, where he recorded a total of 95 catches for 1,035 yards and six touchdowns. In each of the last two seasons, he achieved over 45 catches and more than 500 yards. Additionally, he was responsible for handling both punt and kick returns, averaging over 10 yards per punt return and more than 20 yards per kick return.

The immediate impact of Duarte’s commitment is added stability to Tennessee’s wide receiver room following Brazzell’s departure. While Duarte may not arrive with national name recognition, his experience and versatility provide Heupel with another reliable option as the Volunteers reshape their offense. For a team looking to return to the College Football Playoff in 2026, depth and flexibility will be critical.
From a football standpoint, Duarte brings a well-rounded skill set that fits Tennessee’s up-tempo system. His consistent production at Idaho State gives the Vols value beyond just the receiving game. That special teams impact could earn him early snaps while he works his way into the offensive rotation.
Looking ahead, Tennessee will continue to search for additional playmakers through both recruiting and the transfer portal as the offseason unfolds. Duarte may not replace Brazzell’s production outright, but his arrival helps soften the blow and keeps the Volunteers positioned to compete in a deep SEC landscape next season.
