Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Julian Lewis turned heads at Big 12 Media Days when he described how much the offense has changed under new coordinator Brennan Marion.
Lewis said Colorado’s preparation is more detailed this year, especially when it comes to studying opposing defenses, a stark contrast from what he experienced as a true freshman in 2025. His comments quickly became one of the more notable moments from the Buffs’ Media Day appearance at The Star.
“I’m actually looking at the defenses now. Last year we weren’t really looking at defenses much, just kind of high school, free-balling, just out there playing football. But it’s a lot bigger than that now, so it should be fun,” Lewis said on ESPN.
The remarks were not surprising, as Colorado struggled on offense last season. The Buffs averaged just 20.9 points per game, ranked 116th nationally in scoring, and finished with only three wins. They were also near the bottom of the FBS in total offense and first downs, while their defense allowed 30.5 points per game.
That production led to a reset in Boulder, with Marion replacing Pat Shurmur as offensive coordinator, while Chris Marve has taken over the defense. Sanders has said he wants his offense closer to 35 points per game, and Marion’s record at Sacramento State and UNLV suggests that is the standard Colorado is chasing.
Lewis’ comments hinted at a cleaner system and a more mature approach heading into 2026. For Colorado, that may be the clearest sign yet that the Buffs are trying to fix more than just the playbook.
