Ohio State has suffered a major blow to its national championship hopes after quarterback Julian Sayin was ruled out indefinitely with a throwing-arm injury. The sophomore quarterback was injured during the Buckeyes’ 19-15 victory over Indiana on October 17, leaving head coach Ryan Day with a difficult decision as the team prepares for the second half of the season.

How Sayin Got Injured

Sayin suffered the injury late in the fourth quarter against Indiana after taking a sack from Hoosiers defensive lineman Mario Landino. Although Ohio State recovered the fumble, Sayin was forced to leave the game and head to the locker room for evaluation.

He later returned to the sideline with his throwing arm in a sling, immediately raising concerns about the severity of the injury.

Before leaving the game, Sayin completed 15 of 29 passes for 235 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Despite the turnovers, his ability to make plays through the air has been a major part of Ohio State’s offensive success this season.

The Buckeyes initially expected him to miss several weeks, but the situation became more concerning when Day provided another update on Tuesday.

Ryan Day Provides Concerning Update

Day announced that Sayin is out indefinitely and that Ohio State is preparing for the possibility of playing without its starting quarterback for the remainder of the season, including the College Football Playoff.

The coach did not provide a specific recovery timeline, leaving uncertainty surrounding when Sayin could potentially return.

The timing could hardly be worse for the Buckeyes. Ohio State is ranked No. 3 nationally and has championship aspirations, but losing its starting quarterback creates a significant challenge for an offense built around his passing ability.

Sayin has thrown for 2,007 yards and 19 touchdowns this season, establishing himself as one of the country’s most productive quarterbacks.

Who Replaces Sayin?

With Sayin sidelined, the Buckeyes must determine who will lead the offense moving forward. True freshman Luke Fahey and sophomore Tavien St. Clair are the leading candidates to take over the starting job.

Fahey replaced Sayin against Indiana, while St. Clair brings considerable recruiting pedigree and a strong arm. Both quarterbacks will have an opportunity to demonstrate their readiness during Ohio State’s bye week.

The coaching staff will need to find a quarterback who can protect the football, distribute the ball to the team’s talented receivers and handle the pressure of playing against elite competition.

What This Means for Ohio State

Ohio State still has plenty of talent, including star receiver Jeremiah Smith, but replacing Sayin will not be easy. The Buckeyes face a difficult schedule ahead, beginning with a road matchup against USC on October 31.

If Sayin cannot return, Ohio State will need its backup quarterback to step up immediately. The Buckeyes’ championship hopes remain alive, but the loss of their starting quarterback has made the road to a national title considerably more difficult.
