MANHATTAN — A Kansas State football assistant coach posted on social media that he’s been let go by the school, a day after Chris Klieman announced his retirement after seven seasons.

Van Malone, the school’s assistant head coach, defensive passing game coordinator and cornerbacks coach, posted on X that he’s looking for a new job.

“7 great years at Kansas State, 7 years of All Conference players, Big XII Championship, Numerous 8-Win seasons. Phenomenal impact… coaches, players, staff, and in the community!” Malone posted. “I’ve learned to count my blessings even in uncertain times… I’m fired though, holler if you hear of something that fits.”

Malone was signed through the 2026 season and made $435,000 annually.

Malone coached seven All-Big 12 corners while with the Wildcats. He was named the 2023 Big 12 Cornerbacks Coach of the Year.

Over the years, Malone has been credited for developing players like Jacob Parrish, Julius Brents, Justin Gardner and AJ Parker.

Most notably, Malone served as SMU’s defensive coordinator from 2015-17. He’s been on college coaching staffs since 2003. He’s been a defensive backs coach at Texas A&M, North Texas, Western Michigan, Oklahoma State and Tulsa.
