The Kansas State Wildcats were beaten in every phase by the Houston Cougars Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
The final result was a 35-16 victory at the hands of the No. 22 Cougars. It was easily the Wildcats most disappointing showing of the season. After the game, first-year Wildcats coach Collin Klein held nothing back when describing the outcome of the game.
"They kicked our butts on both sides of the football," Klein said. "Starting offensively, early weren't able to get in any rhythm, running or throwing the football."
This is the second straight defeat for the Wildcats. After a poor second half in the loss on the road against the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Big 12 opener, they were outplayed for four quarters versus the Cougars.
The loss dropped the Wildcats to 3-2 and 0-2 in the conference. This was also the first loss at home for Klein, so that made it even more disappointing.
Let's take a look at some of the takeaways.
THE WILDCATS HAD NO ANSWER FOR COUGARS PASSING GAME
Quarterback Conner Weigman had his way with the K-State defense. He completed 19 of 30 passes for 242 yards and four touchdowns. He won the reunion against Klein, who was the offensive coordinator for the Texas A & M Aggies when Weigman was on the roster. After allowing two Bearcats running backs to run for more than 100 yards two weeks ago, this time it was the Wildcats' pass defense that struggled. So, now Klein has to address a pair of issues.
WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE K-STATE RUN GAME?
This was supposed to be one of the Wildcats' strengths but it has struggled the past few weeks. Rodney Fields was held to 46 yards and averaged less than four yards a carry. Joe Jackson, who was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection last year, has barely made an impact. Even quarterback Avery Johnson has been a non-factor running the ball.
DO THE WILDCATS NEED MORE FROM AVERY JOHNSON?
He has been the starting quarterback for three years now. This is supposed to be the year he takes it to another level. Although Johnson hasn't performed poorly, he hasn't shown he can win games for this team. He needs to become that quarterback who can go out there and WIN games, especially with the running game struggling so much. It just seems that's what it's going to take for the Wildcats to somehow climb their way back into the Big 12 race. You hate to say, but Johnson may have to start playing "hero" ball to make this work.
