Kansas State's Collin Klein Refuses To Make Season Opener About Himself

A lot has been made about Collin Klein returning to coach the Kansas State Wildcats, where he was once the star quarterback.
As it should. It's a great storyline. It's not very often a legendary player can return to lead his Alma Mater, especially in what could be considered a rebuilding situation. The Wildcats are coming off disappointing a 6-6 season.
But while Klein is excited about the excitement of it all, he doesn't want folks to forget about the big picture. This isn't solely about him. Actually, it's more about the players.
And reminded everyone that during his first game week press conference.
"It's definitely a lot for sure," Klein said. "I remember running out that tunnel for the first time against North Texas as a true freshman, and that's what I want for every one of our players. This is their first time at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. This is not, any part of it, about me – it's about our players, and that's what gets me so excited about that moment for them."
Klein wants the focus on players like quarterback Avery Johnson, running back Joe Jackson and defensive end Wendell Gregory. Johnson is back for his third season as the full-time starter. He's back for redemption after a somewhat disappointing junior year, where he battled inconsistency following an impressive 2024 season.
