Kentucky at Texas A&M: Week three defensive X Factors

Kentucky football faces their first road game of the season as they will be in front of a hostile crowd in College Station to take on Texas A&M. We have previewed the Aggies defense, and what the Wildcats offense will be up against on Saturday. Both of these defense have looked like the better side of the football through two weeks, and we could be in for a defensive battle this weekend. Let's take a look at the X factors on the defense that can make an impact in this game.

ED Mi'Quise Humphrey-Grace

We talked all offseason how the scheme change on defense could be extremely beneficial to edge defender Mi'Quise Humphrey-Grace. Against Alabama, we saw that play out as Humphrey-Grace created issues for the Crimson Tide offensive line. The pick six was an unbelievable play from the 6'4, 270-pound edge. He also had a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss in the week two loss, but Humphrey-Grace is a football player that will put a ton of stress on this unproven Texas A&M offensive line.

DT Tavion Gadson

Another player that will be problematic for the Texas A&M offensive line is defensive tackle Tavion Gadson. Gadson was another player we said would benefit from the scheme change and is a guy the NFL has a close eye on. We also saw that play out against Alabama, as Gadson had 1.5 sacks, two tackles for loss and a pass deflection. Gadson is a powerful three technique with long arms that can overwhelm interior offensive lineman.

S Ty Bryant

Ty Bryant is the returning leader of this defense, and he has kept the momentum going from his incredible 2025 season. Safety Jordan Castell has made a ton of plays through two weeks, and this safety tandem has proven to be a strength of this defense. Bryant needs to use his ball hawking ability we saw last season and create a turnover on Saturday. This is a game where turnovers could really amplify things for either team, and quarterback Marcel Reed has been known to put the ball in harms way at times.

S Marcus Ratcliffe

The Aggies have one of the best safeties in the conference as well with Marcus Ratcliffe. Ratcliffe has eight tackles and a pass breakup on the season. He is the leader of an extremely talented secondary for Mike Elko. Elko will do a lot of what Jay Bateman does, given Bateman was his defensive coordinator for two seasons before coming to Lexington; they will rotate this safeties pre-snap and post-snap to try and confuse opposing quarterbacks.

DT DJ Hicks

DJ Hicks is one of the best defensive tackles in the SEC, and does a lot of work that doesn't show up in the stat sheet. Hicks is 6'3, 293-pounds and is great at stopping the run, which could really slow down the Wildcats running game. Kentucky has to get the run game going better than they did last week against Alabama, and Hicks is the best player that can slow that down. Kentucky's interior offensive line has to create movement up front to open up holes for the running backs, this is a key area to keep an eye on this Saturday.
