Kevin Jennings Comes Full Circle Against The Program That Found Him

DALLAS – Long before Kevin Jennings became the face of SMU football, Missouri State saw something in the Dallas quarterback that most programs missed.
Jennings was still at South Oak Cliff in November 2021 when Missouri State became the first Division I program to offer him a scholarship. He committed to the Bears three days later. Less than a month later, everything changed.

New SMU coach Rhett Lashlee saw Jennings while scouting other players during South Oak Cliff’s playoff run. SMU offered him on Dec. 8, and Jennings eventually chose to stay home.
Nearly five years later, the story has come full circle.
Jennings leads No. 22 SMU into Saturday night’s matchup against Missouri State at Ford Stadium, facing the program that first gave him a chance.
“It definitely does,” Jennings said when asked whether the matchup carries extra meaning. “It’s been a long journey. I’m just grateful I got a chance to come to SMU and be able to be here.”
That journey has gone far beyond what his recruiting profile suggested.
Jennings entered college as a three-star prospect without a Power Four offer. Now he’s one of the most productive quarterbacks in the country and the centerpiece of SMU’s “K7NG of Dallas” Heisman campaign.
Through three games in 2026, Jennings has completed 64 of 87 passes for 989 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions, connecting on 73.6 percent of his attempts. He’s averaging nearly 330 passing yards per game.
His rise followed a 2025 season in which Jennings threw for 3,641 yards and 26 touchdowns, earning All-ACC recognition.
There’s another layer to Saturday’s reunion.
Missouri State coach Casey Woods spent the previous four seasons on Lashlee’s SMU staff, including time as offensive coordinator, before taking over the Bears.
So Missouri State knows Jennings well.
But nobody knows his journey better than the program across the field that first decided he was worth betting on.

Saturday isn’t just another nonconference game for Jennings.
It’s a reminder of how far he’s come … and how different his career might have looked if Missouri State hadn’t made that first call.
