Mississippi football was briefly without one of its biggest offensive stars vs. Miami in the Fiesta Bowl.
Rebels star running back Kewan Lacy sustained a right hamstring injury at the end of his 73-yard rushing touchdown to start the second quarter of Thursday’s College Football Playoff semifinal against No. 10 Miami at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
He returned to the field on Ole Miss‘ first offensive series of the second half. ESPN’s Laura Rutledge reported that Lacy had a black sleeve put on his right leg for his injury and that he received treatment for his hamstring from Ole Miss’ medical staff during halftime.
Lacy missed Ole Miss’ final three drives in the first half, as Logan Diggs filled in at running back. It’s the second notable injury that the 5-foot-11 running back has sustained during the Rebels’ CFP run, as he exited Ole Miss’ CFP first-round win over Tulane on Saturday, Dec. 20 with a shoulder injury.
He scored Ole Miss’ lone touchdown in the first half of the Fiesta Bowl, and was responsible for 75 of the Rebels’ 145 total yards of offense in the first 30 minutes of action. He has the longest play of the night for both teams at 73 yards.
Lacy entered Thursday’s national semifinal game ranked third in the nation in rushing yards (1,464) and second in rushing touchdowns (23), which doesn’t include his rushing score against Miami.

ESPN’s broadcast showed Lacy on the sidelines during the Rebels’ fourth offensive series, where he was riding a bicycle to keep his hamstring warm. ESPN’s Laura Rutledge reported that members of Ole Miss’ medical staff told Lacy they wanted to keep his hamstring warm while out of the game and that they could do something for him at halftime.
Going into the locker room at halftime, Golding told Rutledge that Lacy would continue to be looked at during halftime and that they would know more about his status for the second half after that.
“They’re going to look at him so we’ll figure it out at halftime,” Golding said.
He returned to action on the Rebels’ first offensive drive of the second half, where he did not receive any carries.
