The Alabama Crimson Tide suffered a 28-7 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship Game.
The Tide struggled immensely on the offensive side of the football. Alabama as a whole compiled -3 rushing yards during the contest, as the Tide were unable to get anything going on the offensive side of the ball. Daniel Hill led the team in rushing yards with a total of 11, but Alabama was ultimately dominated by the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball in Atlanta.
The Alabama defense played excellent football throughout the first half of the matchup. The Bulldogs were able to block a punt in the first half of play that resulted in excellent field position for Georgia, and the Bulldogs were able to capitalize and took an early 7-0 lead over the Tide. Georgia took full advantage during the swing in momentum as well, as the Bulldogs led the Tide by a score of 14-0 entering the second half of play.
Here are three key takeaways from the Crimson Tide’s matchup with the Bulldogs in Atlanta.
Injuries on both offense and defense hurt the Tide immensely
Alabama was missing a number of key playmakers on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball in the SEC Championship. Star defensive lineman LT Overton was ruled out with an illness, while both Jam Miller and Josh Cuevas were ruled out prior to the contest as well. Injuries on both the offense and defense ultimately played a massive role against an elite Georgia team, as the Tide will now turn their attention towards a spot in the College Football Playoff bracket.
Ty Simpson threw for 212 yards and just one touchdown during the loss
Simpson had his fair share of struggles throughout the entirety of the contest. The junior threw a momentum-shifting interception during the first half of play, and Simpson was ultimately unable to recover despite throwing a touchdown to Germie Bernard late in the matchup. Simpson continuously struggled against the Georgia defense, and the Tide generated just seven total points against the Dawgs as a result.
Keon Keeley, James Smith combine for lone sack against Georgia
Alabama struggled on both sides of the football throughout the majority of the contest. Both Keeley and Smith combined for the Tide’s lone sack on the afternoon, as each player has continued to step up on the defensive side of the football over the course of the second half of the season. The defense as a whole struggled in Atlanta, but both players could prove to make a serious impact should Alabama qualify for the College Football Playoff.
